i wish my therapist wasn’t a mandatory reporter so i could tell her how i actually feel without getting my whole life changed and taken away

you can! definitely ask her what is mandated to report. in my experience, they only have to report if they think you are in imminent danger of hurting yourself or others. so if you say “i have suicidal thoughts every day” that’s fine. if you say “i am going to go home after this and hang myself” then she has to report. it needs to be a specific threat for it to be reportable <3

I talk to my counselor about suicidal thoughts. We just make a safety plan after. Your counselor is going to ask you “do you know how you're going to kill yourself?” and just say no so you're not hospitalized. Give them GENERAL information like “I feel like dying” or “I think about killing myself” DO NOT GO INTO DETAIL ABOUT METHODS, LOCATIONS, etc

i’m a mandated reporter but i work at a school so im not sure if its the same. but in my experience with therapy (as someone with constant suicidal ideation) its a lot easier to navigate those conversations if you start with asking your therapist what they have to report
