no i’m sorry with the current state of the world we absolutely need to stress the importance of being independent and educated. everyone can make their own choices but education is the best way for women to advance in the world and no longer rely on men. it absolutely needs to be treated as the wonderful thing it is

First off. I don’t know a single person who’s independent. I’m sure there’s some people who live up in the mountains in wooden cabins… but everyone sort of relies on everyone (outside of mountain people) for most things. The educational system has put so many of my sisters in a mountain of debt for a 401k that barely pays out when they are 60 and a cubical + a boss who doesn’t give them their own paid time off, I would rather the whole system that feeds that burn to the ground than ever 1/2

2/2 reccomend another one of them sign papers to be in debt for whatever “education” is. Over half of which, I don’t have the heart to tell them, I gained learning what they paid for in college on the internet. It’s not even my major.

They could focus on literally anything they want to do, like building an outdoor garden for cats, and I would consider it a better investment of me giving them my money, as long as they didn’t go into debt to/for the corporate “education” machine.

maybe i should have been clearer, but im specifically talking about financial independence. its a very dangerous position to be in if you dont have your own source of money. also, if you dont believe in education, what’s your alternative? that’s what i’m really struggling with here. higher education absolutely needs to be fixed and no one should be going into mountains of debt for it, but until that happens… should women just stop going? should we just focus on marriage and family?

It’s up to each of us. Like I’m happy for the girls who figure marriage out. Today it seems way harder than what our parents had set up. More power to the women who manage to pull that one off. I wish I could sleep in and tend to my library/garden all day. I know a girl who’s a welder. (She’s kinda mean, but in a good way) and she’s apparently pretty good at it. But I have mad respect for her cutting her own path rather than relying on a system we know hurt so many people.

she still got an education 😭 she went to school and got training to be able to do that. what happens when your husband doesn’t want to fund you sleeping and gardening all day? what happens if he’s no longer able to afford that life? what happens if he DIES? and in this situation, why is it okay for him to go to school and get an education to make that money, but it’s not okay for a woman to do the same thing? what if i want to be the breadwinner? why is that bad?

Girl I would not date guys whose skills are only based on their education. They might as well be corporate house pets too, even if they are daddy’s favorite boy. Same thing. All the blue collar skilled people in my family right now are earning 2x the median income in apprentice positions (no debt) with everyone at it more than 10 years earning 4x+ the median income (again no debt) If any of those guys die, their wives will be left with all assets and no debt. The equivalent of a college 1/2

2/2 equivalent of them marrying a guy out of college who worked for 30 to 40 years and then died, with health insurance, and a brokerage account. Each year the asset compound and with no debt, it stacks QUICK. Also why are you so focused on people dying? Where do you live? Iraq? Even death’s among service members is at a record low for casualties.

1. when the fuck did i say you SHOULD marry men like that? my whole point is that we shouldn’t be telling women to marry and depend on men for their finances, and the best way to ensure a woman is able to support herself financially is by going to school and getting an education. that education can and does include trade school! that’s STILL school!

If you’re in debt you’re not financially independent though. I get what you’re saying and studying history is a great way to find what worked and what didn’t. Even the financially independent ladies of the court in Europe didn’t seem very happy. I don’t think it’s about money, I think it’s more about figuring out a way to surround yourself with people who love and appreciate you. Corporate jobs, historically l, also don’t appear to be it.

you’re right. so you should have enough brain power to see that relying on men to make the money ISN’T a good option. women need to be able to earn our own money. we need to be able to self sufficient enough to support ourselves without financially depending on anyone else. you can surround yourself with people who love you AND make your own money. i’m confused why you seem to be so against this

I’m gonna try to be humble enough to admit I made a mistake I didn’t realize until it was too late. I’m already so deep into this, there aren’t many ways out except forward. (For me at least, Idk yalls financial/family situation)

i’m not trying to be mean but this is why education is so important. it teaches you critical thinking skills and gives you more experience working through problems and being able to form a plan for your future. the fact that, apparently, this is the FIRST time you’ve thought of the options i gave you is really fucking scary actually. you spent this whole convo disparaging education and yet you never once thought of removing yourself from the institutions you’re against?
