For now, I would give him some space. I guess he feels you violated one of his boundaries. I understand why you wanted to help and that’s a totally normal reaction, but he wants some privacy concerning his situation. If I were in this situation, I would say something like “Hey (bf), I’m sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable. I really care about you and want to help you as much as I can. I’m here for you if you ever want to talk to me. I love you.”
