hot take but wanting to be a stay at home mom feels like delaying adulthood. i bet it would be awesome to have someone else worrying about the bills and going to work and funding your life, but it’s not smart. if anything happens, you have no options

I think having kids will make someone grow up faster than any job

it doesn’t even matter if you get a degree. what use is that if you don’t use it for 15 years? or if you go straight from college into marriage? you have no experience!

I think there are ways to critique that lifestyle without doing the classic misogynistic bit of downplaying household labor 🫩

I think there’s better ways to critique some SAHMs without this wording! Personally my mom was the breadwinner for several years while my dad was in law school, and they both worked until they had kids. My mom was unhappy at her job and my dad made enough money, and once all kids were in high school my mom went back to work at a job she enjoys now! Yes many people jump into it too fast and have no back up plan, but calling being a SAHM “delaying adulthood” is just weird

i disagree. have you seen the way some mothers act? having a kid doesn’t automatically mean you’re any more mature, especially if you don’t understand how important financial independence is

how am i downplaying it by saying that adulthood requires independence 😭

i think it’s just as pathetic for someone to want another person to do all the chores too, but at least in that scenario if you want to leave, you can

Girl youre the one who said its delaying adulthood. I agree with a lot of your sentiment but putting it in such a shaming way is ew

yeah tbh that’s fair. i probably could have worded it better, i just don’t know any other way to describe the naivety that goes into the decision to not be able to provide for yourself

Hey so most stay at home moms aren’t doing it for 15 years… it’s just until kids go to school and then they are able to work while kids are in school. But also, god forbid a happy and trusting couple does whatever they have to do so that they can raise their children.

i mean… is 7-10 years really better? or ig minimum would be 5 if they only had one kid. i just think putting yourself in a position where you’re not in control of your finances is a recipe for disaster. if someone thinks differently tho they can make their own choices and live with them

“Some mothers dont mature so therefore parenting is not more effective than a job at bringing about maturity” Thats not equivalent. Im comparing motherhood to a job. A good employee doesnt have to be mature, they just have to get work done. They can go home and blow all their money on funko pop and ramen for all the company cares. But if someone wants to be a good mother, it necessitates becoming mature.

and if someone wants a good job, they also need to have the skills and experience to do that. that requires showing proof that you have the dedication, intelligence, and self discipline to go through that schooling. i think that’s a much better way to form maturity than having a child. if you personally think a child is a better way to gain maturity, that’s your belief. it definitely doesn’t make it true tho

I would say its almost exactly the opposite: immaturity is what allows someone to obsess over something like that enough to get to the top. Elon Musk, Trump, Zuckerberg, countless boomer ceos, the programer that makes 300k but cant talk to a girl, the high powered lawyer who hasnt called her parents in months, the neurosurgeon that is world renown but cant fold laundry. These are far more common than the well adjusted mature adult. They get by on excellence at something thats valued,

Capitalism encourages immaturity disguised as productivity

capitalism also encourages procreation without the emotional or financial means to support them. the original comment and argument you made was that having a child matures you more than having a job. if that were true, we’d see a lot more successful teen parents and a lot more homeless doctors bc they never learned how to manage their money or live independently

Youre using a capitalist definition of success (material prosperity) as a substitute for maturity (the ability to respond to life situations in an emotionally stable, wise, and age-appropriate manner)

Capitalism doesnt pay wisdom, it pays skill/connection. Again I cite all the tech bros and other “successful” capitalists who rant on twitter that someone said something mean

that’s kinda my point though. with how capitalism works today, for the majority of people, you NEED to be able to be emotionally stable and be able to act appropriately. i think you learn that by getting an education much better than just by having a child. and ig if you can cite tech bros i can also cite all the girls i went to hs with who had kids before the age of 20. none of them are doing well and none of them have matured

genuinely tho i think we’re both saying that things you need to put effort into (education vs doing a good job of raising a child) both require a lot of maturity. and ik there are a lot of young, immature moms who do step up. i just think the idea of having children = automatically means you’re more mature isn’t true and hasn’t ever been proven

I think to be a mother requires maturing, and being a mother is different than just having a kid. But having a job in many ways does not require maturing, only the ability to meet certain functional necessities related to said job.
