Werid thought, we talk about euphoria being set in HS when it would be more appropriate in college. I feel the same about never have I ever, bc why was the pitch of the show about a minor trying to lose her V card? That’s a little odd

I despise whatever genre of show that is.

That’s fucking weird. Like there’s obviously plots to each ep but that being the main point of the characters arch is very weird. I feel like it could advertise an expectation for teens to lose their virginity at a young age. Especially bc I was pressured a lot by my peers to do it in hs and “get it over with”

idk i feel like euphoria and never have i ever are totally different. never have i ever isnt really ABOUT sex. like, the characters mostly don’t seem sexualized to the audience unless it’s from the main character’s pov and she’s sexualizing them. teenagers have and talk abt sex and i dont think they really went crazy with never have i ever, unlike euphoria

I never watched the show in its entirety but one time my old roommates were watching it and I’m like “isn’t this the show where the premise is about a highschooler trying to lose her v card bc she wants to be cool or something” and they were like “yeah, but other stuff goes on.” OH SO WERE JUST OKAY W IT THEN?!?!?!

Went back to watch the season 1 trailer and that is 100% the point of the show. Sophomore girls trying to be cool and ‘pop their cherries’ and learning how to fuck. Talking about getting railed and going on an escapade to lose their v card to someone. WHAT TF IS THIS

I mean… I think it’s realistic to some highschool sophomores, they talk about sexual stuff. And the way it was portrayed on the show was intentionally cringeworthy and, at least the way I viewed it, not trying to arouse the audience.

Yeah I can understand that. I still think the advertisements for it were very much pointed to it being sexy vs cringe. And I did watch the show i just still don’t agree w the pitch being around 16 year old girls trying to lose their v cards. I think it could have been don’t better if it was in a college setting bc the hs setting is so overpopulated w the “I need to do x to be cool, and I need a bf to be cool.”

Also I’ve heard of a lot more girls in college who go through the whole “I haven’t kiss a boy and I’m 20 and I want to do that and start exploring my sexuality in my 20’s” and it’s something that’s never touched on in media

i mean that’s kind of the point though, the pressure to lose your virginity and do other things. that pressure doesn’t exist in the same way in college. like it sounds like you just want a completely different show set in college, which is fine, but it’s not like you could just put the characters in college and have it still work

The pressure still very much exists in college. In the dating scene or w groups of friends ect. You can still have a nerdy character go to college and be like “we’re going to be wild in college” and struggle to navigate social life. The reason why the show is set in hs is because Hollywood loves hs

yes i know it still exists that’s why i said “in the same way”. the show is set in high school because if it was set in college it would be a fundamentally different show. you said you haven’t watched the whole show so idk why you think you know everything

Yeah I can get how it can be a bit of an off take since I haven’t watched the entirety of the show but it was something old roommates of mine watched often. And yes it would be a different show; but I dont know how it detracts from my point that the PREMISE for the show would have been better suited for a college setting.

I get what op is saying, and as a loser in hs a lot of those pressures still exist in college and navigating college life is still difficult to do. Obviously not every single plot from the show would be the same w a different setting. But it’s strange that there’s a show whose premise was advertised on minors trying to pop their cherries. Which looking at it as someone who is older and has a sibling in hs it’s just a bit odd

idk i guess i dont see the problem bc i dont feel like the show is really sexualizing minors. if you watch it it’s pretty clear we’re not meant to think the high schoolers are sexy, we’re meant to relate to them or be reminded of our teenage years. yeah you could have college kids trying to lose their virginity but none of the side plots or relationship dynamics would work in college.

because i think the premise functions completely differently in a college setting. and i disagree, i don’t think it would work. you do and that’s fine, we can just not agree.
