irish people were always legally classified as white. the discrimination they faced was mostly due to xenophobia/religious differences (which is why they weren’t viewed as ‘truly’ white) not necessarily bc of their race. there are OTHER forms of discrimination a white person can face ofc, but there is no system of oppression based off of the discrimination of white people.
…again. that was because of xenophobia and religious intolerance. im literally irish i am fully aware of the history of irish discrimination in the us. im not arguing irish people haven’t been discriminated against im saying that it was NOT because of their race. im a white lesbian! i know white people can be the victims of oppressive systems! but im NOT oppressed bc im white
Prejudiced literally means you judge people based on superficial qualities without knowing much else about them. Racist specifically means judging someone based on race. You are right that system of oppression is connected to racism but literally opposing the fact that racism also affects white people IS literally a system of oppression.
Racism leads to discrimination and leads to actions such as denying someone a home. Anyone can be discriminated against regardless of race. Yes other races definitely have more severe acts of racism against eachother but it doesn’t change the fact that white people can be discriminated against because of their race.
So if your uncle Joe starts yapping about how much he hates Mexicans or whatever over thanksgiving dinner, he’s not racist, because he doesn’t have power over them? So many people here talking about racism like it’s ONLY a legal/structural concept and not a general umbrella of racial prejudice
hes still being racist lol you still can’t be racist to white people no matter what kind of hoops you’re trying jump through. what person of color has to prove that they are being discriminated against? only white people do it because it doesn’t happen within the confines of US race relations
He’s prejudiced, not racist, since racism is ONLY in reference to systemic oppression, I’m not being oppressed because one random person with no power over me doesn’t like how I look. If a black person were prejudiced against latinos, would you try to call that racism? Neither have power over the other
the correct term for joe would be xenophobic. "mexican" is not a race, it's a nationality and ethnic group. regardless, your point about it being prejudice and not racism would still be false if the mexican person was black. racism is racial prejudice that occurs as part of a system. it's not "prejudice is when it's an individual". prejudice is when it happens outside a system. racism is when it happens as part of a system. joe would absolutely be participating in the american system of racism
