Some people do not understand, having a bias against ANY race is racism- including white people. Stop saying it’s not racist when it literally is

it’s prejudice but it’s not racism. you can’t be racist to white people the same way you can’t be misogynistic to a man. it’s the difference between being mean vs a system of oppression

are there any examples? You can be prejudiced against anyone but racism is systemic.

if it’s not systemic it’s not an ism. systemic racism is not a TYPE of racism it is the very essence of what racism was coined to describe

sorry but as a white person literally who cares when the worse consequence of “racism against white people” is hurt feelings

Thank you 😭 racism against white people isn’t nearly as serious as the legal and systemic racism against nonwhites, still racism by definition though

irish people were always legally classified as white. the discrimination they faced was mostly due to xenophobia/religious differences (which is why they weren’t viewed as ‘truly’ white) not necessarily bc of their race. there are OTHER forms of discrimination a white person can face ofc, but there is no system of oppression based off of the discrimination of white people.

systematic racism is a type of racism. and individual can still be racist towards a particular group. it’s just a different type of racism. it’s still racism.

thats prejudice. racism is the application OF that system of oppression. you can’t be racist to someone unless that exists. like it simply is not the same lol

Girl I wouldn’t even bother. Half of girl talk has never read a single book on systemic racism or racial inequality. They’re stuck on the idea that reverse racism exists. It’s crazy

…again. that was because of xenophobia and religious intolerance. im literally irish i am fully aware of the history of irish discrimination in the us. im not arguing irish people haven’t been discriminated against im saying that it was NOT because of their race. im a white lesbian! i know white people can be the victims of oppressive systems! but im NOT oppressed bc im white

so you’re not actually arguing for the existence of racism towards white people? you’re saying it could just hypothetically exist?

Prejudiced literally means you judge people based on superficial qualities without knowing much else about them. Racist specifically means judging someone based on race. You are right that system of oppression is connected to racism but literally opposing the fact that racism also affects white people IS literally a system of oppression.

racism is denying someone a home bc of their race. prejudice is judging them. white people in the have never had anything denied to them ON THE BASIS OF BEING WHITE

Racism leads to discrimination and leads to actions such as denying someone a home. Anyone can be discriminated against regardless of race. Yes other races definitely have more severe acts of racism against eachother but it doesn’t change the fact that white people can be discriminated against because of their race.

racism is believing one race is superior to another. it has nothing to do with institutions.

it is not a "type" of racism racISM *is* systematic and the word itself necessarily suggests that the suffix "-ISM" refers to systems (schools of thought, doctrines, theories, principles, etc) belonging to groups

So if your uncle Joe starts yapping about how much he hates Mexicans or whatever over thanksgiving dinner, he’s not racist, because he doesn’t have power over them? So many people here talking about racism like it’s ONLY a legal/structural concept and not a general umbrella of racial prejudice

If the only form of racism is systemic oppression, individual people can’t be racist Which I hope most of us would disagree with

he’s racist because he’s being racist toward a marginalized people. If he starts yapping about white people then he’s prejudiced

But if racism is only if it’s systemic oppression, your uncle isn’t systemically oppressing anyone just by existing and having prejudiced opinions

So he’s not racist, but he is prejudiced instead, since prejudice is what individuals have, and racism is the systemic oppression

hes still being racist lol you still can’t be racist to white people no matter what kind of hoops you’re trying jump through. what person of color has to prove that they are being discriminated against? only white people do it because it doesn’t happen within the confines of US race relations

Anonymous replying to -> #10 5d

He’s prejudiced, not racist, since racism is ONLY in reference to systemic oppression, I’m not being oppressed because one random person with no power over me doesn’t like how I look. If a black person were prejudiced against latinos, would you try to call that racism? Neither have power over the other

just because it's not codified as part of a legal structure doesn't mean it isn't inherently systematic. half of the word literally denotes a system; the suffix "-ism" in rac𝘪𝘴𝘮 means precisely that. there is no system of racism against white people on account of their whiteness

the correct term for joe would be xenophobic. "mexican" is not a race, it's a nationality and ethnic group. regardless, your point about it being prejudice and not racism would still be false if the mexican person was black. racism is racial prejudice that occurs as part of a system. it's not "prejudice is when it's an individual". prejudice is when it happens outside a system. racism is when it happens as part of a system. joe would absolutely be participating in the american system of racism
