as a loan word (i.e. how we use it in English) it’s used to refer to BL / yaoi content featuring muscular and/or chubby guys, usually more typically masculine-looking than the characters in BL, and by association we also use that term for the characters themselves

usually thought of as being created by-and-for gay men, whereas yaoi is usually by-and-for women there’s been pushback against this term by bilingual academics though, mostly citing the fact that “bara” is also used as a homophobic slur in Japanese
