“You don’t owe anyone anything” is a lie. Yes you do. If you want friends and community you owe them your time, consideration, respect, and all the other things you’d want to receive yourself. It’s a two way street.

They brought in a completely new direction that isn’t meant by the saying. Obviously living in society requires you to give things to get. That’s a given. They completely missed the entire point.

I didn’t. I know the saying was originally about people protecting themselves from others taking advantage of them or pouring from an empty cup. I agree you don’t owe people your constant time and energy in that sense. But that is NOT the only way a lot of people use that phrase now. Some do it to avoid uncomfortable conversations, naming their faults in a situation, or doing things for other people in the same way they expect to have done. That’s the use the post is calling out.
