It’s one thing when the NSFW fanart is on Patreon but the fic? Nah that’s dangerously close to copyright infringement

Omg I was reading a fic on tumblr that did this and when I dmd the author telling them that they can get sued by DC for this, they said I just didn’t want to support small authors and blocked me.

Isn’t that whole buy me a coffee site for supporting small authors?

Yes but that’s more a donation than making people buy your subscription for a fanfic. Like the legal grey area is a lot more risky with patreon than kofi

Exactly, the donation isn’t a paywall that the product is hidden behind- it’s just a donation for legal purposes. With patreon it’s more like you’re paying for a product, and they can sue if that product is using licensed material. I do wonder how this applies to people who make 3D models and costumes of IPs…

From my basic understanding the grey area is why artists won’t use the names of characters or media as titles for their work on patreon. This person specifically used the name of a character as the title and that was mostly what I was warning them about as a large company like DC would see that as a copy write violation. It’s a lot of grey area with fan works but kofi isn’t seen as directly profiting off the original and that’s how they protect themselves/people who use it.
