I really understand not wanting certain topics to be “romanticized”, but something is wrong when a story that depicts MY experience is accused of endorsing something. Sometimes media is supposed to make you uncomfortable!!

I also think it’s concerning how so many people will get upset when a fictional abuser is portrayed as likable, when…most abusers are, really. That’s why people defend abusers. That’s why people stay with abusers. Abusers are obviously bad people but they are still people. They have depth and reasons for doing what they do, as flawed and fucked up as they are. An irl abuser I know justified his abuse because he was abused as a kid. I fear if I represented this in a character I’d be attacked

Portray it anyway. Speak your truth. Some ppl will come at you but they’re wrong so ignore them. You may also want to put a TW in the summary

Specifically for ppl who’ve been abused in the past

I hate hate hate when people portray abusers as 100% always awful to everyone all the time/clearly always villainous. That’s almost never how it works. Speak your truth, the real ones will support you
