It really depends on the ship. And as a (ace) woman I have to say I find that a lot of woman characters just aren’t written as well as man characters. Maybe more interesting characters means more interesting ships?

To me it’s more about the characters than the sexuality of the ship. I’ve read good gay ones and good straight ones. But I’m a plot first, relationship second kind of reader so that might impact things as well

A good writer makes all equal, but many writers aren’t that good. Or at least they can’t look past gender and write a good relationship regardless of gender. Also, there’s just more male characters, and so more options with more variety and nuance. The women often get shelved :(

It does come down to how the woman is written with this but straight ships are often written just. So formulaically to the het romance genre in general, like a man who’s protective or possessive or dominating to at least some extent and a woman who’s passive and most of her characterization becomes about the relationship and not her own development. And it’s even more obvious when I see the rare fic of a straight ship that isn’t like that at all.
