I would try contacting the writer to ask if it’s ok. They might be lurking. Might have abandoned the fic thinking no one wants to read it.

I think it’ll do more good than any harm, other readers will thank you and it’ll only be a problem if the author comes back from the dead to ask you not to :)

It’s a very good story, and it inspired me to write something with a similar set up (same characters, same au) but with a different plot (story left unfinished before main plot hit)
