It really bothers me how some people on TikTok are calling authors egotistical for not wanting their works to be uploaded on a massive Google Drive. I just feel like attacking authors goes against all the fanfic etiquette I know

Like, yeah, the fics are technically free to be downloaded by anyone, but if an author asked me to take down their work because it made them uncomfortable, I would definitely take it down. Not reading one of my fav fics for a few weeks isn’t worth hurting the people who make it

I mean there are problems on both sides, we should be respecting authors and whether or not they want their work(s) on a Google Drive, whatever the reason may be, and also I think that there are people that are posting fanfic for the “wrong reasons” and aren’t in it for the love of the game and the community aspect (definitely not majority but I think it’s becoming more common as fanfic becomes more mainstream)

I feel like you’re right fanfics seems to be more mainstream lately, but what are the wrong reasons people are posting for? I feel like Ao3 does a pretty good job of stopping people from profiting off of their works in their terms of service so it doesn’t become a site where people are buying/selling fan works, so I’m a little confused how someone could benefit from them aside from the joy of sharing with the community

Social media in general honestly. So many people just hop on a bandwagon and parrot certain talking points, even if they're completely wrong, uninformed, or ill-intentioned. I just tune most of it all out these days honestly.
