Take a look at this article. A myocardial infarction is a heart attack’s technical name

Does anyone know a cardiologist I could ask questions about heart attacks? I want to write it accurately in my fanfic

A heart attack is NOT the same as cardiac arrest. If I catch you saying ‘cardiac arrest’ if you patient is not in cardiac arrest, I will beat your ass with a cooked piece of spaghetti

Thank you for all this! 🙏😭🥹 I'm going to look over it later when I'm writing. This is really well done research, thank you for taking the time to help me. I've been researching this for months and I’ve definitely learned a lot about heart attacks (one of the main character’s father figure is having a “widowmaker” heart attack from a LAD artery blockage) to the point that when my neighbor had a heart issue and passed away, I was going through all of the steps EMS was doing in my head

This is the 12 lead electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) lead placement. Basically, the patient will get a bunch of stickers, particularly under their left boob, that little wires can be clipped onto to investigate the electrical activity of the heart

I also recommend looking into stress tests, but if your character is having a big and ugly MI, the above info works just fine

When a patient presents to the ER with a suspected heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction or MI, they get the following treatment regimen while waiting to get a definitive diagnosis via a 12 lead EKG, cardiac markers (troponin blood lab), and imaging

The character will also get several blood labs done, meaning that the nurse or lab technician will start an IV and draw some vials of blood to check cardiac enzyme levels (like troponin) which tell us if some of the heart muscle (myocardium) is dying

MIs also feel like panic attacks and really bad heart burn

Early detection for MIs and strokes is crucial. Time is tissue, the more time that passes, the more that tissue is without perfusion which will lead to worse and more irreversible effects which may include death

1. Oxygen 2. Nitroglycerin (every five minutes x3 until chest pain improves, will give MASSIVE headache, if chest pain doesn’t include pt is probably having an MI) 3. Aspirin 4. Morphine

It takes way longer to set this up than to actually do the procedure

If your character has a hairy chest, the nurse doing the EKG may elect to shave bits of his chest because a lot of hair can fuck with the reading

All of these are standing orders per chest pain (angina) protocol that nurses can give without a physician order

This requires a physician order

In my experience, a positive EKG for an MI was enough for the physician to be like, “Aight get the patient down to the cath lab!”

A heart attack *can* lead to cardiac arrest, tho. If your character goes into cardiac arrest, CPR is started

I didn't see my neighbor pass away, it was just my family and another neighbor’s family gathered on the street when the ambulance came. I was holding in all my thoughts because I didn't want to explain to anyone there that I knew the mechanics because I was writing a FWB-to-yearning-to-lovers smut fanfic

If you’ve been researching this for months and know what a LAD artery blockage is, I’m sure you’re gonna do just fine. You probably knew all the stuff I commented 😂. All my info in the comments comes from nursing school and irl experience in the emergency room as a student nurse. I wish I could tell you more about the cath lab, but I didn’t get to go 😭

I’m sorry to hear about your neighbor. I’m sure that was traumatic to watch

Honestly, everything you told me was incredibly helpful! So much of the info I'm able to find on heart attacks is either explaining the symptoms and the surgery, but barely any online materials go over the procedure in the ER. I totally understand since the general public probably isn't as interested on the diagnosis procedures, but reading this was a Godsend

Like, I know so much about angioplasty, heart stents, and statins now. I even went online to see a surgical prep video of the procedure, but this was incredible. And it's okay, I didn't know the neighbor too well so the most it affected me was it made me give my mom a harder time to eat healthy so she can avoid heart issues
