I’ve seen ones where it almost a curse. One I really enjoyed had a character falling overboard, and in an exchange for seven years above ground thy promised their soul to the see in this Faustian bargain. That was fun. I also like the sillier or hornier versions where it’s the siren, cannibalistic type thing or where becoming one is some kind of curse

Ooo interesting. I wrote one last year that the mer felt cursed bc he really wanted to go on land because his found family, and therefore his new identity, was there (sorry for the shameless self plug)

they don't wanna hear it but everyone knows it. like for ex supernatural is a white show (almost no recurring POC in early seasons) but it's not painful
