Such a good question. I prefer to write in present tense purely because i confuse myself writing in past tense. I want it to feel like the story is happening now, not being told like it happened long ago. It makes its it easier for me to write the characters talking or thinking about future or past events. However i have no preference when i read other work.

I didn't realize there was a difference until 2024 :( But I mainly do present tense, past if it's a flashback

I prefer present tense, but past tense is definitely more common.

I *hate * reading present tense. “Joe huffed and turned around”. 💕💕💕 “Joe huffs and turns around” 🤢 I find past tense is much more forgiving while bad grammar stands out in present tense.

Generally, stories are written in past tense. Both fanfics and books. It just makes it feel more polished and flow better than present tense imo

on this, i feel like you give your story a bit more clarity writing in present tense bc it ensures that flashbacks written in past tense read as flashbacks (unless you’re deliberately writing it all in past tense to confuse the timeline, which is fun too)
