Using Gen AI to write your fanfics defeats the entire purpose of writing fanfics and fanfic culture. I don’t care if you are “bad” at writing. Open up a document or notepad and write the damn thing yourself or don’t write it at all.

Society pushes that you have to be the BEST at anything you do, but that isn’t the case with FanFiction!! There is no good or bad fanfic, it is just fanfic. Fanfic is about having fun, and expressing your ideas no matter how original or “cliche” they are. It doesn’t matter if your fic has 100 words or 100,000 words. What does matter is that if you (or a group of people!) wrote it. The only bad fanfic is soulless fanfic written by a thieving Gen AI chatbot.

People using Gen AI to write fics is why I (someone who is not a good writer) decided to start writing fan fic.

I would rather read a fic where every word is misspelled and the characters speak using [name]: and there are no paragraph breaks or punctuation or anything at all. over a fic that is perfect but soulless ai slop.

I tell you the “bad” ones always have some of the best ideas and concepts I’ve ever seen. Like they stick in my brain like sticky rice.

And if they do, there’s literally a 99% chance it’s the new spam method OTW recently warned us about.

It affects authors (and artists) because genAI can’t *create* anything, it works by scraping ideas/content from actual creators and piecing it together into something “new” for whoever gave it the prompt

You should ask people who live in Memphis about their utility bills.

How does it do that? Is that different from understanding many forms of literature and prose?

In order for Gen Ai to work, they require MASSIVE environment polluting data facilities. These facilities tend to pop up in lower income areas and use EXCESSIVE amounts of electricity and clean water to operate. In return it heavily pollutes the areas, creates disturbingly amount of constant loud noises, and causes a lot of normal everyday residents who have been living in that area for decades to see an extreme rise in their cost of living due to the data centers using so much energy.
