my grandpa died recently and all of his kids and I feel the similarly, we wish he was kind enough for us to grieve the loss

Relatives death can be hard. For instance, I felt relief when my grandma died. She had been battling cancer AND a stroke for so long that she was merely a ghost of who she once was. You can grieve or not whichever way you choose.
