I completely understand how you feel. I’m also a first gen student (my mom went to college, didn’t finish and dad dropped out of high school) and am about to finish my 2nd year of college. I’m an art education major with a minor in sociology and my parents give me a mix of two energies when it comes to school. Either they don’t care what I’m doing unless I’m getting good grades or they degrade and make fun of my degree because they act like all I do is glue cotton balls together.
That is not a bad degree choice. Idk if this is common at other schools but at mine the most popular majors are engineering and nursing. Personally I never understood why those get so much hype when my school has a lot of majors to choose from, outside of the fact that they make a lot of money. Two of my cousins who went to 4 yr college went for engineering and nursing ironically
For reference they saw me working on a couple projects last semester for my design 2 class and they would constantly make comments about the stuff I had to do like gluing cotton and sanding foamboard. Meanwhile they didn’t see the amount of studying I did for my other 3 classes which included drawing which I spent several hours a week on. But I didn’t hear any complaints when I passed all my classes 🙄
felt this, and i’m here for fucjing mechanical engineering💀 literally same situation as you except my mom dropped out of high school and my dad went to college for a semester. and like don’t get me wrong they still offer support and say “good job” and shit sometimes but they do not understand the work it takes to get good grades in this degree. especially at my college, only like 15-20% of mech e students here actually graduate in 4 years. p much everyone ik is taking an extra semester like me
and my parents like cannot comprehend that, bc highschool was a cake walk for me i got 98-100s in all of my classes while not trying and even skipping 2-3 days a week to work (i originally didn’t plan on going to college) but anyways now my parents see me struggling to get d’s and c’s and they just think it’s bc i don’t lock in or something. like no, these professors just hate us im pretty sure bc some of my classes are so bad everyone fails, so they curve everyone up to a c
