Sometimes I think he was doing it on purpose. He can't go from child prodigy to that without raising suspicion. Also his dad is a colossal asshole who is not above using his kids as bargaining chips so I would not be surprised if that's how Lance gets back at his dad. Too bad that Lance isn’t a good person otherwise I’d feel bad for him.
