No, the team came first. The car company was founded as a subsidiary for the team to make money to race. McLaren was the team before it was the automaker, and McLaren Group was spawned as a parent company from the racing team. McLaren Group was bought by Bahrain in March 2024, and in December 24 they sold the auto manufacturer to Abu Dhabi
