Depends how competitive McLaren will be in these new regulations. While they didn’t have a great start in this second ground effect era, they were smart to switch up their side pod concept during its first year. McLaren had some luck with development blunders from all the top teams. Mercedes and Ferrari stuck too long onto their “bathtub” and “zero” side pod concepts. Had they caught onto the trend of downwash side pods earlier, they would’ve been on a much better development trajectory.
Then there is Red Bull who had a significant flaw on their car in 2023. Newey apparently tried to voice his concerns about potential issues with the car but they were not taken into account. It only became apparent that there was something wrong after the RB20 suffered a significant performance drop midway into 2024. Ultimately, this caught up to them with McLaren creating a car that was in a league of its own this year.
