If it’s the invasive, maybe keep it as a pet? Then it won’t contribute to repopulating but you don’t have to kill it

I also have a hard time killing invasive species 😔

yeah that large is definitely non-native, but actually they don’t do too much harm nor do they use too many resources to really be considered invasive! they’re kinda naturalized now, at least in my state, so we just refer to them as non-native.

If it cheers you up at all, I think I did spot a native mantis on campus the other day! It was a greenish brown rather than straight up green, and was only about the size of my thumb. The way you describe PA native mantises makes me think I saw one of the natives. I have to say though, spotting and picking up a bug like this must’ve been super cool!

It’s called a Preying Mantis. Please do NOT kill it.

It’s too brown, and it’s much bigger than it’s supposed to be. Native ones are smaller

Looking into it, the native Carolina mantis is very similar to the European mantis, but the Carolina varieties seem to be more brown than the European are green. The one I saw was pretty much brown, and I think had a “rectangular face plate”. I doubt it’s anywhere around but I spotted it on the stairs near the Soltz hall! Made my day just looking at it :3

I held it for a solid five minutes before it started biting me. I’m not really sure there’s a right way to hold them other than just being careful? Idk

I don’t kill preying mantises at all. I don’t want to misidentify
