Kīlauea has been on and off erupting for a couple years now so I’ve been super fortunate to witness this many times. But this was my first time ever seeing it years ago. My friends and I decided to go up at 2am when it was just us and some photographers.

This is more recent and accidental. I loved it so much I chased down the family to send to them hahaha but they were very appreciative. Thank you pele🤞🏽

Believe it or not it’s actually really cold. At the main viewing point (where those pictures were taken) is I think about 4,500ft above sea level so at night it’s usually in the 20s and 30s. There is a 3ish hour hike that brings you only couple hundred feet above the caldera, I have yet to do it myself but that’s where you will definitely feel the heat.
