
I agree that its not completely black and white and I wouldn’t call it slave labor considering there’s at least some level of choice. but there needs to be laws severely restricting it. Most of these companies can afford to pay. And it puts ppl who have to get a paying job at a fast food joint or something at a disadvantage
Most jobs will not consider internship work if you did not get paid. There is emphasis on “paid positions” and anything unpaid isn’t worth anything. Companies can afford to pay. If you don’t plan on paying or offering some sort of compensation like housing, then it shouldn’t be called an internship, it should be a volunteer position. Especially when nothing sets you apart from the volunteers if you’re all doing the same work. I did 1 unpaid internship,8 was doing everything the paid staff were.
I should have been paid. The facility was run by volunteers otherwise, who did all the same things I and the other interns did. I’ve seen so many people get screwed over by unpaid internships, know many professionals, hiring managers, in the field that don’t truly consider internships as experience because of these issues.
