The Indian government is putting down street dogs en masse after a video went viral of them eating sea turtle eggs and hatchlings on a beach. Idk how to feel 😢

as much as i feel bad for the dogs, sometimes euthanasia is better. being a stray means they’re hungry, at risk of fights, people, cars, wild animals, disease, infections, the cold, etc. and that’s a lot worse than the long sleep, yk? on top of protecting wildlife. i always feel bad for strays, and as much as i wish there was a perfect solution, i think it’s better for them to either have a home or at least not be hungry and cold.

Yeah we euthanize a lot of cats here in America because they’re an invasive species and I try to think of it as a lesser of 2 evils, like it sucks they have to die but they’re killing off many other vital species we actually need for the ecosystem. And like #1 mentioned they probably suffer less overall

Stray animals are massively detrimental to the environment. It bothers us most of the time when it’s cats or dogs being euthanized. Most people aren’t bothered when it’s coyotes or rattlesnake (natural animals we’ve demonized). It may be sad, but it needs to happen.

It really sucks because it’s actively a problem we (as in humans) created and the dogs are just trying to survive and the turtles are just trying to survive, so we make the decision on who survives and to what extent and it hurts but it’s also important

Honestly I’d rather turtles (naturally there) be ok rather than stray dogs (invasive). And if people care abt their street dogs rn they’d keep them inside.

It sucks but also invasive species suck. We need to fix the issue and the cause.

For me, it honestly doesn’t justify and never will justify putting down street dogs. And if that makes me a terrible person sue me. Mass killing street dogs feels like punishing animals for a problem humans largely created in the first place. It’s fucking disgusting

You’re absolutely right, though it doesn’t sit right with me that their motivation seems to be public image as opposed to animal welfare (they only started this AFTER a video of them eating turtle eggs and babies went viral)

i get that! i think it’s better than nothing, though, and hopefully it makes them and other people more aware of the issues

Hopefully they can start doing spaying and neutering instead to help with the problem rather than killing the dogs in mas

Very true same with pythons

cats have caused the extinction of so many birds and other small species and many many others to become endangered i also have a relative who refuses to keep her pets inside full time and unfortunately she’s lost a dog to a car, and multiple cats to a pack of pet dogs in the neighborhood people won’t keep inside. it’s horrible. keep pets inside, and strays and “outdoor cats” really shouldn’t be a thing at all.

True, however pythons are also invasive and extremely problematic for the environment. I LOVE snakes, but I still support their hunting in the Everglades because of how detrimental they’ve been.

Yep. Exactly my point. Unfortunately my mom/older sister are similar. They hate when I “preach” at them about not having an outside cat. Well sadly he caught FIV from another stray cat and died 2 weeks later from the symptoms getting so bad and they had to euthanize. My 12 year old nieces cat. I didn’t want to be like “I told you so” but I had been for the 3 years they’d been letting him out and he’d come back torn up from run ins with other animals in rural north GA.

Humans (irresponsible) are both the issue and the cause.

For centuries India has had dogs on the streets they don’t starve … people feed them, they even let the dogs sleep in the backyards. People care for those dogs. Every area has a set of dogs ( dogs choose their own area and live there for all long as they live) that are fed by all kinds of people in that area. Local NGO’s set up beds and food for them as well if people don’t. All dogs are also treated by the NGO and neutered in order to reduce their population.

euthanasia isn’t cruel, i wish it didn’t have to happen in a lot of cases but it’s not an evil thing

Realistically euthanasia is kinder for them. Rather than starving on the streets, riddled with disease and parasites, injuries, unable to escape the elements, potential abuse, finding clean water, having litters of puppies may of which don’t make it - which does emotionally effect the mother. A swift end is the best anyone can ask for.

People that’s not why they are putting them down they are trying to hide the issues in government by distracting people. If they don’t care about the dogs they don’t care about the turtles either .. they care more about how much profit it gets them because making shelter and funding ngo costs more
