is blaming individuals for  harming the environment through using AI really useful? Is this reinforcing the carbon footprint myth? Or is not blaming individuals potentially allowing individuals to be absolved of their responsibility?

I feel like with AI specifically there are other reasons along with the environment not to use it. With carbon footprint a lot of people feel guilty for buying or using things that they dont have any real other options for. With AI thats entirely a personal choice and optional, i feel like blaming both the individual and (OBVIOUSLY) the companies is the way to go. With carbon footprint with individuals blame companies but with individuals its less blame and more making sure people are aware and

I feel like a lot of the rhetoric around anti-ai has been very targeted towards companies that are incorporating it into their products and everything against individuals has been similar to what I’d expect to see in the context of boycotts. Like I think the nature of anti-ai rhetoric against individuals is comparable to people being anti-Starbucks

Doing what they can when they can. For AI, you can be aware all you want but the only right thing to do is stop. For carbon footprint its nearly impossible to escape. Ai has a relatively simple solution on the personal level.

Should we disown people who use ai until they stop using it?

Honestly yeah man, if its past a point. Until then it should be heavily frowned upon

I feel like a lot of anti-ai when it comes to personal uses of generative ai is a lot like a boycott and when people are passionately anti ai it’s similar to how people are when they’re anti-Starbucks or anti-Amazon. Although anti-ai rhetoric is maybe more intense and aggravated because of how corporations push it on us.

Anti ai rhetoric generally is a different story but I think there’s a distinction between how people are against ai generally or corporations using it and how they are against people using it personally
