Soak your clothes (definitely socks and underwear) with permethrin. It holds on throughout any trip and will still be effective after a few washes

Wear a hat, hair in a bun, pants tucked into socks, long sleeve shirt. Tick defense ain’t sexy but Lyme disease is worse

Is it safe for your private parts to be in chemical-soaked underwear?

yes, it binds to the fabric of your clothes when it dries and becomes an inert repellant. I've used it countless times when backpacking and haven't gotten a tick once/ever had irritant problems. You don't have to use it if you're wary, but it's legitimately the only successful repellant I've ever used.
