If it makes you feel any better, i feel like smaller animals are hard to prove as extinct, because maybe they just evolved to hide better or are just out of view.

Possibly but (at least what I’ve read so I’m happy to be proven false) the ants and rats invasively brought over did at least impact the population. Hopefully it’ll be a case where a few years from now we see “Christmas Island shrew spotted after declared extinct”
