This may be a stupid question but is all AI bad (for the environment)? Aren’t there different types of AI such as ones that help ID animals/things, help with ocean exploration, etc? Do all AI use up (tons of) water and likely space or is it mainly GPT?

I’m going to give the more nuanced answer: When most people are talking about AI being bad, they’re talking about generative AI specifically. Yes there are AIs out there that perform lab calculations in a matter of hours when they use to take days and things of that matter and most have accepted this use as it’s on a scale where it causes mass issues. Generative AI is the one that has the data centers polluting the water supply and overloading the local power grid while producing often

Ai can be used properly and in a way that is helpful like in genetics and medicine! However the way it’s being applied right now and done is causing massive harm to the environment.

There are good use cases for ai, like any other technology, there are also bad/wasteful use cases. If you’re using ai to run drug discovery models on large scale patient data or something that’s pretty chill, but if you’re asking it to rip off an artist’s work or run bots to argue with ppl on the internet it’s pretty bad

inaccurate information and “art” that’s already had copyright issues with larger companies like Disney.

Ahhh I see, thank you!! So how do you know if an AI if generative like are they used for specific things? For ex typically artistic (?) things like recreating “art” or pretending/programmed to be a character?

Are there good ways for the average person to use AI? And do all AI still negatively affect the environment??

If it’s necessary in your field and you know where the data center for that AI is and how they are managing its environment impact: yes. Standard ai use especially when it’s for luxury and silly things? Nope.

exactly; AI is a word thats become meaningless because its so vague. A calculator is technically AI. Matlab is technically AI. But yeah, the main issue is generative ai
