TW: animal death☠️ Me when I watched someone bash live rats’ heads into the ground to kill them at my interview for a zoo/safari internship 🫥 I have no experience with farm work or animal husbandry & they want me to be able to kill live rats and chicks

That seems…. Not right. There’s humane ways to do that stuff. And why do they need to kill so many rats and chicks??

Hate to say it but stomp method has benefits😔it’s the cheapest option (most programs are underfunded!!) and a lot of times the safest, because rat poison travels up the food chain and can wreak havoc later on unexpectedly. Not sure the specifics why they need to kill here but lots of times there’s invasive species we’re gonna have to take care of. Culling of species is just part of working with wildlife and conservation:( it’s sad but necessary

Also poison is a more torturous death tbh. A stomp is pretty damn humane it’s over for the animal very quickly as long as you do it right.

I assume it’s for food for reptiles

Right, I am well educated in the eco/envir. world so I get everything you’re saying. But these people sound like they’re not taking the best approach by a long shot if they’re smacking animals into walls… :/ I’d hope they don’t have an infestation but if they do they need a proper long term solution for that too. Cause if not that puts their staff in danger & whatever animals they care for. Hopefully it can get sorted out!!

I also agree poison is terrible, I’d never wanna go out that way so it’s unfortunate that animals do because of us.

They said that the rats are food for the birds of prey. I’m assuming the chicks are food for the reptiles. The chicks could also be food for birds of prey. The rats are breed to feed the animals. Some of the rats are artificially selected to breed and then be sold. I only found out because the girl killing the rats stopped and “threw” one of the rats back into the cage saying “oh you’re cute”. It seemed like the killing would be a daily occurrence if I worked with the reptiles or birds of prey🥲
