Alright guys I’m starting a campaign with my close friends in a week. Are there any cool/popular house rules people have that I might want to add to the campaign? I’ve been wanting to try some unique and new stuff and this seems like a good opportunity.

I let my players “Hero tokens” instead of inspiration when their character does something creative or cool. It can be used like inspiration, or it can be saved and spent on even more powerful things granted by the DM. For instance, 2 tokens buys the character a premonition foreshadowing something to prep for in the future. 5 hero tokens guarantees that somewhere in the next dungeon there will be a legendary item. It is a good way of incentivizing creative RP

As a DM I’d say don’t be so focused on the numbers esp when it comes to hp for YOUR creatures but read the room and have it go for a few rounds if it’s a harder fight. Don’t make it a nitpicky numbers game

I think this is also used in Critical Role, but as a player I often prefer having taking a health potion mid fight to be a bonus action, just so they don’t feel like they have to wait forever to come back to their turn again. However, my dm also makes it so that using a health potion on a friend takes the action and bonus action.

No thanks. I don’t want to force my players into impressing me in order to win. Some of my players like building characters that are for combat. I’m not going to limit them because I want the story to go a certain way. XP to level 3 made a good video on YouTube about this idea that sums up my thoughts on it

No no like let them min max that’s part of it! I’m saying like if you have just a random hard boss don’t make it they have to drain then HP but make it a few rounds of combat so they get to do the min maxing but it’s not just a numbers game more talking and strategizing with party members rather than “I do the most everyone else is on their own” type shi

So let them minmax, but don’t actually let them use it? Making the boss “a few rounds of combat” makes it so that the person who wants to do good in fights doesn’t matter. If they didn’t exist then the combat would end the same. If my player doesn’t like roleplaying and enjoys the numbers game, they should be able to do that. Obviously if they refuse to include the rest of the party, that can be an issue, but that’s NOT what we’re talking about.

So, respectfully, I will not add that to my game.

Oh yeah I didn’t read it as being rude ur good. I just put the role play into RPG but too each their own🤷 BUT another rule I do is strictly enforce the economy. Make your party financially aware
