One time my DM tried this and I went to the front gate and said “hey, we’re the new recruits. we transferred in from the uhhhh mountain branch. we need to finish our transfer paperwork here.” and nat 20d the deception roll and he was seething as he had his npc lead us carefully around all the traps he set for us. Felt a little bad for ruining his whole setup.
