I think a lot more people benefit from some form of nepotism than they realize. Benefiting from your parents connections or learning certain skills earlier from their exposure isn’t bad. It’s denying the help you’ve gotten while others struggle that is.

To me, nepotism is specifically getting a job you’re unqualified for because you’re parents are x y or z. It’s not nepotism if your parents taught you how to use excel

It’s a part of life, even the small things we’re exposed to come from what our parents were exposed to. So naturally we grow up believing certain paths are ‘normal,’ even when they’re only accessible because of who came before us.

it doesn’t always feel like a privilege until you realize not everyone starts with the same door already open.

as someone who has benefited from my parents standing in society but has also worked my ass off this is so validating

Actually I do too. I’ve gotten an internship and some freelance work through my mom’s connections. Even my networking skills are from being at official event spaces with her since I was a kid. But my actual career and my full time work is from me. I go to networking events alone. Those connections I’ve made and even most of my current freelance stuff is from me. I can’t deny she’s an extra layer of support others don’t have but I’ve put in the work to hold my own outside of her.
