Have y'all noticed how verbally illiterate everyone is? Bc no one reads anymore, the range of words/vocab ppl use when speaking is very small and bland.

I'm constantly praised for my 'unique/colorful way of speaking' while I literally just use some less than SUPER AVERAGE BASIC words. I should NOT be getting praised for that. We need to step it up guys 😭

It’s an ongoing phenomenon since the country’s founding. suggesting that it’s inevitable.

This is important because just last week a video of Tate celebrating why he doesn't read resurfaced. The world has got to the stage of celebrating idiocy and proving that ignorance is bliss.

Yes. The English language by itself has soo many words that have been phased out as time as gone on. It makes you wonder what the future will look like.

If their vocab is limited then expurgate them from your life!

I debated writing this but, the only time in life that you receive praise for it is when you are young. As in, when you’re an adult, no one cares and if you continue to use superlative language, it comes across as haughty. No one cares to be around people like that for long, it becomes exhausting after hearing yet another interesting word (queue eye roll). The other phenomenon is people of color over compensating to prove intellect. That’s not racist, just an observation over decades

HOWEVER, many new words have also been created. Language is always about culture at the end of the day, and many words simply have no reason to be used anymore. For example, a Bematist is a Greek/Egytian surveyor who measured distances. They were literally walking rulers, measuring by feet. Now where would you realistically ever use that word?

Likewise, plenty of new words or slang were familiar with describe our culture now. With enough time, they’ll also be phased out and replaced with others.

Again, I'm not talking about words that are ACTUALLY interesting/complicated. I'm talking about words like 'Snazzy' 'Whimsical' 'Majestic' 'Ludicrous'. Basic 7th grade reading level words. Are now thrilling. It's bad out here. And I am an adult.

It’s inevitable, and language, I hate to use the term but it’s fitting, is fluid.

The US education system has failed us. There’s a national literacy crisis and not enough people talk about it. Unfortunately, many older kids and young adults these days don’t have an average reading level higher than 8th or 9th grade
