My boyfriend wants to add me to his bank account. I don’t make any money, but he said he wants me to have access in case of emergency. I’ve never heard of bf/gfs doing that. Is it normal?

Ehhh I wouldn’t. I’m married and we don’t even do that. It just seems like a slippery slope, especially with only dating

You found a good guy who wants to provide for you. Many people will see it as wrong, but it’s not. He’s not asking for your money, just sharing his. Go for it

Then you own the money in the account too if it's a joint account

Why is it a slippery slope?

I have a couple of friends who did this and they dated for 7 years, broke up, and the guy continued to use the bank account because of all the paperwork you need to mutually complete to cut off access. I think a better idea would be something like a Venmo card where he can put money into the account for you to have access to, rather than direct access to the bank account.

Venmo is not a bank they are not FDIC insured

Good for you, but if he break up with you, then he might be legally required to give you some money in that account by court order

Yeah, I’m not sure what the work around is in that case. But I still don’t think it’s the best idea to have a joint account

I don’t see any issues with that

It's something he could hold over you in the future if arguments come up

I guess I could see how that’d happen but we never fight

Thank you! I still haven’t made up my mind, but I appreciate you seeing it as a good thing
