Hot take: don’t shorten people’s names unless they ask you to. I have a super long name that people have always just made nicknames for which I hated and now that im in college I love my given name its so pretty and people finally actually use it
Yea I get pissed off when people use nicknames on me especially because most of them are not friends with me

Tbh just ask them not to? Nicknames to me are a sign of endearment, if I’m shortening your name as a nickname then it’s because I like you and consider you a friend
So just ask me not to and I’ll happily stop

No that’s completely fine and respectful! A very specific example is the guy at my dorm checkout he always calls me a shorter version of my name that my family used to call me and I keep saying that’s not my name but he doesn’t listen

With all the hate and racism and pain in the world this is your complaint? Okay.

This is directly related to racism and hate very very often

If it’s racism I get it. If it’s Mike for Michael I don’t.

I don’t get calling Michael mike if his name is Michael. Names are innately tied to identity, and to just blatantly ignore someone’s representation of their identity (usually out of disrespect) is pretty hateful imo

I just don’t get calling someone something they ask you not to? 😭 Like if I say my name is madelyn (thats not my name but yk) then you call me maddy and i dont know you and i ask you not to and you dont stop its weird

Totally! Your phrasing just kinda implies that doing it without being directly asked to sucks, when I think it’s the other way around! It’s fine unless you’re directly asked *not* to

Yeah ig I just don’t understand nicknaming ppl without them asking or unless you’re close
