Cheating isn’t okay but honestly I understand why you feel so bad about this, even if you shouldn’t have done it that is still hard to go through. I still think he made the correct choice, given that relationships are built on trust and you were violating his. I hope you can take this experience and be better in the future.

He was the side guy because I was with my bf first and I was seriously about to breakup with my bf despite the social pressure to stay with him. I’d even started moving my stuff out of my bfs house. But then my ex discovered the truth first and dumped me

I’ll never justify cheating, but I’m sorry things turned out for you the way they did, especially if there was social pressure. You should’ve felt free to end things if the relationship wasn’t working.
