It is called urgent care because you are able to get quick same day treatment instead of waiting 1-2 weeks to be seen by your pcp, not for situations that are life threatening or that may need special care. Once again, UC is verrrry limited to what they are able to do, as, again, it’s not an extension of the ER, which most think it is. At my UC, we can’t do IV’s or blood transfusions, blood work, any scans other than xray, and can’t prescribe anything much more than antibiotics.

As someone who works at an urgent care, I truly think people don’t know what an urgent care is for, as they are restricted on the level of care they can provide; mostly illnesses and superficial lacerations. I have checked in patients with appendicitis, stroke, missing extremities (hands, digits, ears, even a whole leg once) and we end up transferring them to the ER. I understand ER wait times are egregious, but urgent care is not equivalent.

Like the diagram shows, it’s a medium between PCP and ER. If you have a condition that is urgent enough that needs to be seen today, but is not bad enough to go to the hospital for, that’s what urgent care is for ☺️
