nihilism gets kind of an unfairly bad rap because most people associate the term with “giving up entirely” rather than “making peace with meaninglessness” or “a willingness to acknowledge futility”

“nihilism” refers to a pretty broad spectrum of ideas, perspectives and philosophical concepts so it kinda irks me to near-exclusively see it framed as an innately bad & harmful thing based solely on a limited understanding of its definition

case in point: how many of you are upvoting #2 without so much as doing a quick google search to confirm that your personal definition of nihilism is an accurate one? why are you so confident that you already know everything about a complex & varied philosophical subject when confronted with an unfamiliar perspective?

Nihilism pretty exclusively defines that life is meaningless. You’re talking about stoicism, and they’re totally different. Nihilism is harmful lowkey

excellent demonstration of one of the mentalities i was expressing frustration with. for one, that’s existential nihilism, which isn’t the only strain of nihilism in existence. for two, the harm you’re thinking of is merely one type of reaction to the idea that life is meaningless, not actually the necessary conclusion of the belief—for an alternative reaction, consider anarcho-nihilist theory

if you encounter a more expansive definition of a concept than the one you were familiar with and your immediate response is to assert “you’re wrong, you don’t know what you’re talking about, i have to correct you” rather than approaching with curiosity and intent to develop a better understanding, that’s a problem
