fr? all I got out of significant weight loss has been achey bones, loose skin and the inability to tolerate cold weather. people treat me better than they used to, but that just pisses me off to notice bc no one actually deserves mistreatment just for being fat

happy for you that your relationship with food has been healed, I just think we deserve to live in a society where we aren’t trained into viewing our own bodies as shameful for being bigger in the first place like, the fact that you would have to go to the lengths of taking a literal diabetes medication just to feel comfortable in your own body is evidence that it’s an issue of “I was being unfairly shamed for my size to a deranged extent” rather than “losing weight improved my life”

which isn’t to say that I think you did anything wrong by taking an injection prescribed to you by a doctor, tbc! it’s disturbing though that the medical institution is so eager to distribute these meds, when the reason they aren’t even prescribed as the first line of treatment for diabetes is because the side effects are known to be so severe / risky

i was binge eating every day and i was obsessed with food. literally every moment i was awake i was thinking about food and it was making me miserable. i def agree that a lot of people are abusing meds for weight loss and that it’s a direct response to fatphobia, but you’re making a lot of assumptions about my life that aren’t true. i started on this medication bc diabetes and high blood pressure run in my family and i wanted to get ahead of that before it caused significant health issues for me

sorry, I think that since this is such a touchy subject for me I ended up coming across way more “finger-pointing” than how I actually feel. cause I really don’t mean to condemn you for taking it, which would be true regardless of your family medical history, and I meant it when I said I was glad it helped with your relationship to food

but like, that being the case, please hear me out—I’m not saying this as a “gotcha”, but I wanna draw attention to what I said about GLP-1s not being the first line of treatment for diabetes if you were being prescribed a medication strictly for the purpose of blood sugar management and not additionally for weight loss, you would have been given something like metformin or jardiance instead, because those are lower-risk treatments. I know this because I’m diabetic myself

and that’s a significant part of what worries me about this entire phenomenon. because you’re not alone in taking GLP-1s at least partly out of concern for your health, and yet your doctor prescribed you a medication that’s known to pose unnecessary risks to your health when they could have given you something safer. doctors have a responsibility to be trustworthy & well-informed but they’re swayed by profit motives and unchecked biases
