With all due respect, that statement sounds a lot more like a reflection of your own experience than the actual reality of the gym. There are certainly some conceited men who only want to attract women with their body, but to the well-adjusted man, looks are just what gets your foot in the door. Once a man has gotten that far, it’s a lot easier to form a connection over their emotional and intellectual appearance.
No I mean it’s a running joke.. you’ve never heard how men are more interested in other men’s progress at the gym than women being attracted to that? A very large chunk of people go to the gym do it mostly for aesthetics, it’s not just some small minority of conceited people. Also I don’t even go to the gym so how would this be a reflection of my experiences 😭
That is true, though I’d argue it’s pretty easy to be “aware” of an issue when it’s propagated online—a well-spread narrative, as you said. I know you don’t have the experience of being in the gym, but it seems disingenuous to imply that your lack of information is excusable when the whole argument is centered around a demographic you have no knowledge of.
It isn’t impossible to have sufficient knowledge to understand and describe a group’s particular behavior. I’m not claiming to be an expert on gym-goers or gym culture, but as an outsider who has been able to observe, I can confidentially say many of the people I know go to the gym for aesthetics as a huge motivation.
