I had a roommate from Thailand last year (she was a PhD student) and she was HORRIFIED at the reality of the USA. She was genuinely in despair for us. 'I wish I could take you back to Thailand with me ☹️' she was so sweet 😭

She kept lamenting how horrible our quality of life is here, and how in Thailand they were taught the US was some fantastic, great place. But it's really genuinely a horrible shithole of a country. She was so upset 😭 She was also notably horrified over the rampant hatred/bigotry. And she was very disturbed over our views/treatment of trans ppl.

That's part of why she was so upset. She expected the US to be significantly better than Thailand, for instance she referenced armed guards at the voting booths in Thailand. But she was pm like 'Yeah y'all are making me appreciate Thailand MUCH MORE.' She said 'At least they make it clear we don't have free and fair elections. You also don't have free or fair elections here, but they game you guys into believing that you do.' (Not bar for bar, her English wasn't 100%, but yk)

Again, race relations in east and Southern Asia are on a level we rarely experience in the U.S. this didn’t happen
