Haiku, especially in English, don’t always have a pattern of 17 syllables. It’s a convenient metric to remember the most common approach in this particular form of Japanese poetry, but that adherence can sometimes make them sound stiff in English. And if you want to maintain 17, you can divvy them up between the lines to different lengths, like with a 593 pattern.
