
Fun fact from a wildlife ecologist: lions aren’t even patriarchal!! Each pride is led by a group of the eldest females because they’re the most skilled hunters in the family. The male is literally there to be a guard dog!! They’re not even kings. Just adds even further to the layers of mysogyny that run in our understanding of the world

The article is definitely skewed but not wrong at all I agree it’s just not aligned w what you’re stating.. “the male is literally there to be a guard dog” while protecting the pride is only one task of theirs. Misogyny, of course, plays a role in assuming the male lion is the leader, but I think the reason for lions being kings while hyenas are viewed as evil largely just has to do with the way they look. we tend to associate ugliness with evil, and because hyenas are comparatively ugly to lions they unfortunately get that role
