Misogyny, of course, plays a role in assuming the male lion is the leader, but I think the reason for lions being kings while hyenas are viewed as evil largely just has to do with the way they look. we tend to associate ugliness with evil, and because hyenas are comparatively ugly to lions they unfortunately get that role
