I slightly think that people who hate others who say the “r-word” are hypocritical because they use other phrases that “make fun of” people with disabilities like calling things ‘lame’(which is used in bad situations) means physically crippled…

everyone ought to work on using less casually-ableist language (yourself included lmao, “crippled” is an incredibly loaded term) but it’s patently goofy to equate the usage of these two terms when one of them is a literal slur

I feel like it’s really only an issue when someone calls someone who is actually disabled the r-word. Intention and effect are more important, and if someone is using it to make fun of themselves or close friends I don’t feel like it’s an issue.

Don't know if I'd say "hypocritical", maybe "deliberately ignorant". The issue is the euphemism treadmill; one year the r-word's bad. The next year, "mentally handicapped", its replacement, is deemed inappropriate. The next year, you can't say "disabled", and so on. It doesn't end, so are we really going to just continuously censor more words over time?

notice how only one of these warranted censorship in the form of referring to it as “the r-word”. consider also that “disabled is not a dirty word” is a rallying cry of disability justice activists and disability scholars. it’s not as simple as you’re trying to making it, sounds like you just aren’t particularly well-informed on this subject

yes, none of those other words would get you banned for not censoring them, which is evidence that they aren’t considered offensive in the same way that the actual slur is. that’s exactly what I’m pointing to.

“handicapped” is outdated, “disabled” is not. there are well-established perspectives on these things which are shared by the vast majority of disability scholars & activists

you misread my comment, try again. yes, you could be reported for using the r-slur, because it is a slur. the other words are not slurs, and thus you did not need to censor them. the fact that you only needed to censor one of these words is evidence that they aren’t all on the same level of offensiveness. this is my third time repeating the same sentiment to you

and 20 years ago is not “all the time”for you when I doubt you’re over the age of 30 lmao. these things do not change so rapidly that you would actually have reason to be weary over it

your input on this subject has been tedious to look at since your very first reply to the post, true. you’re more than welcome to disengage. in fact I encourage it!

like I said, there are tangible reasons why certain terms accumulate baggage over time. that is the reason why language evolves.

it was not a “mild pejorative” when we were kids, holy shit. you were just ignorant as a kid. I’ve been physically disabled since early childhood so I have perspective on this subject. all your replies to this thread have demonstrated a lack of insight and you just keep digging yourself deeper

finally! could have saved us both some trouble by not attempting to speak on subjects you’re under-informed on in the first place
