It took turning 20 to realize why I kept getting overly possessive then eventually having a huge blowout fight with every close friend I've ever had. In hindsight, it was pretty obviously my fault

I was taking literally everything to heart, feeling everything too deeply. Friendship is not like it is on TV, in real life, there's a pretty bold line between platonic relationships and romantic ones and I didn't know that I was always toeing it. People generally do not value friendships as much as romantic relationships. My fundamental misunderstanding of friendship and my tendency to be clingy, possessive, and easily wounded/disappointed was ruining all my platonic relationships.
