coming from an emts standpoint. we are first responders. when we are giving aid to patients things can drop at a hat, weapons have been pulled on us. we have been stabbed, etc. we also have issues with psychiatric patients and have been choked out, physically attacked, etc. it’s more of a self defense and safety issue.

I do acknowledge that, that’s all true. Maybe we just work in totally diff environments cause for us, the police are with us on like 99% of our jobs, so I just feel it’s unnecessary for us to also need to do all the firearms and tactics training

true that, i do know many people in ems that come from rural communities and smaller cities that don’t really have the resources that they need for police escorts so sometimes they literally have no choice but to walk into potentially dangerous environments. plus when you’re in the back with psychiatric patients i’m like a 5’6 woman and sometimes i get whole 6’7 male patients that are jacked. there’s no way im winning that fight. 💀

nope i’m working in a smaller city primarily with psych patients, plus im in ift so if something goes sideways im lowkey cooked. 💀

we also have to respond to 911 calls sometimes and we are the first on scene

Ohh okay, well if your dealing with mostly psych patients then yeah I can understand why you should have at least something in case shit hits the fan. For me, we cover a large mostly suburban area and only do 911 but we are also lucky to frequently arrive after a PD unit or at least have one arrive shortly after us. So I guess it’s mostly an agency by agency thing
