I’d want to make a good first impression so I’d probably pay it, but long term I think splitting the bill is a sign of mutual respect and equality and I view it as important to us being compatible in a relationship

For me I’d always pay on the first date, but make it clear before we go on a second, if we do a second date, that I believe it’d be fair to either split or flip flop back and forth in future.

I think that’s a great system. The way I think about it for myself is that if they are not comfortable splitting the bill, that indicates an incompatibility in worldview and/or personality that means we should not date.
