when people are afraid of like super normal things for no reason i legitimately see it as an evolutionary failure. like what do you mean if you see a butterfly you’ll cry??

and not things that are genuinely harmful in some way like water or heights. i mean irrationally fears of harmless things.

Has op ever taken introduction to psych? People have always had irrational fears, lol. Nice to know some people are dense pretending to be intelligent

humans are just funny and weird like that. for some reason i have a visceral…not so much fear but discomfort when it comes to cotton stuffing specifically. like cotton balls are fine but cotton that is/was inside something and is visible or poking out of it (teddy bear, comforter, chair) makes my skin crawl

i’ve largely become less afraid of balloons and them popping around me but when i was younger this used to be a huge fear of mine, too LOL. unlike the cotton one, where i have no clue where thst comes from, i know my fear of balloons popping was cause when i was younger i got a balloon and i was so happy with it but then it just unexpectedly popped for no discernible reason 😭 i guess it scared AND scarred me a bit

pretty sure intro to psych would actually support my point..? the existence of irrational fears doesn't make them adaptive. if a fear serves no survival purpose it’s maladaptive by definition.

but that makes it a rational fear rather than irrational right?

this seems way more like a sensory aversion rather than a fear. but i guess fear could easily be developed through an aversion to something like the feeling of cotton stuffing or the loud noise a balloon popping makes

actually the more i think about it i feel like origin of the fear is rational, but the fear itself could still be considered irrational since there’s no real threat being posed. so i’m not too sure.
